Batman #11 Value: A Record, Doubled

The number circulating for this comic is around $65,725 for a CGC 9.4, reported as an August 2016 sale, I could not open a primary source for it, and the date reaches me secondhand. It is what you will find quoted, and it is a decade out of date. Batman 11 value rests on that fact.

In November 2024 a CGC 9.4 sold at Heritage for $132,000.

Same grade, eight years, and roughly twice the money, if the 2016 figure is right. The 2024 sale I can point at directly, and that copy carries no pedigree that would explain the gap.

There is a mid-grade anchor too, and for most owners it is the more useful number: nine months before the 9.4 record, a CGC 5.0 brought $14,400 in Heritage’s February 2024 Golden Age Showcase, a record for that grade, and the band most surviving copies of this book actually live in.

The cover

Batman throwing a punch across a spread of playing cards, the Joker reeling away on the left and Robin coming in from the right. It is one of the most reproduced images of the Golden Age and it is the reason this issue outprices its neighbors by a wide margin.

Nothing especially significant happens inside. No first appearance, no origin, no death. The comic is bought for the picture, which puts it in the same category as the Monk cover on Detective Comics #31, a book the market prices as an image rather than as a story.

That has a practical consequence. On cover-driven books, buyers care intensely about how the front presents: color, gloss, whether the image is clean and uncreased. A defect across the Joker’s face costs more than a comparable defect somewhere unremarkable would.

Why 1942 Batman comics are harder to find than they look

Print runs in 1942 were large. Batman was a major seller and DC printed to demand. So why is high grade scarce?

Two reasons, both to do with the war. The paper was poor, because the good stock went to the war effort, so the copies that survive are more brittle and browner than a 1940 book. And the wartime salvage drives consumed enormous quantities of old magazines in exactly the years afterward, children were actively encouraged to hand in their comics.

The combination means the surviving population skews low and the high-grade copies are disproportionately scarce relative to how many were printed. That is why a 9.4 can bring $132,000 on an issue with no first appearance in it.

Which early Batman issues actually matter

Early Batman is a run where the values do not follow the numbering, and a stack of them gets mispriced constantly.

• #1 (1940), first Joker and Catwoman, in a category of its own.
• #2, early Joker, and a scarce book.
• #11, this one, priced on the cover rather than the contents.
• The rest of the first twenty, all carry real value, unevenly, and largely on cover strength.

The thing to internalize is that on this title a famous cover can outprice a first appearance in a neighboring issue. That is why I would rather look at a group of early Batman comics together than answer a question about one issue number in isolation.

11 receipts share one grade; the CGC 6.5 line runs $2,390 (2008), $9,560 (2017), $8,400 (2019), $10,500 (2021), $8,400 (2023), $12,000 (2024), $11,400 (2024). Both newest and strongest: $18,300, sold in 2026.

Selling a Batman #11

1. Do not accept a quote built on the 2016 figure. Ask what dated sale the number comes from. A stale figure on a famous cover is one of the more expensive things a seller can rely on.
2. Photograph the front carefully. Flat, even light, no glare across the card fan. That image is the asset.
3. Expect tanning and do not try to correct it. Wartime paper browns; that is normal and priced in, and anything you do about it is not.
4. Check the surrounding run. Early Batman issues all carry value and rarely arrive alone.
