Amazing Spider-Man #7 is the Vulture’s comeback — and this time he’s smarter. In their first fight back in ASM #2, Spider-Man grounded him with an anti-magnetic inverter. So the Vulture spent months in state prison building improved wings that could instantly flip magnetic polarity — nullifying the inverter completely. Peter swings into their rematch confident and gets absolutely clobbered.

Second appearances of Silver Age villains carry real weight, especially when they’re improved. A 4.0 copy of this book runs $800–$1,000. I’m Gabe, and I buy ASM #7 in every grade. Whether you’re in LA County, Orange County, or anywhere else in Southern California, call me at (951) 515-9604 and I’ll come to you.

Why Second Appearances Matter

The Amazing Spider-Man #7, cover dated December 1963, is one of the earliest second appearances in the Spider-Man run. The Vulture’s first appearance in ASM #2 established him. But this issue cemented him as a recurring villain — and showed that Spider-Man’s gadget-based wins wouldn’t work twice on the same opponent. Smart villains adapt.

Most collectors building an early ASM run need this book to complete the sequence. So demand stays steady. It’s not as expensive as the single-digit first appearances, which actually makes it one of the better value buys in the early Silver Age run for collectors on a budget.

What Happens in the Issue

The story opens in state prison, where the Vulture has been a model inmate for months. The warden trusts him enough to let him work in the machine shop. However, he’s secretly been building a new flying device under everyone’s nose. During an exercise period, he strips off his prison uniform, activates his new wings, and soars over the wall.

Meanwhile, Peter hears the escape on TV during volleyball practice at Midtown High. He fakes a headache to get out of class, rushes home, suits up with his anti-magnetic inverter, and heads out confident. But Peter doesn’t realize the Vulture has deliberately designed his new wings to counter that exact device.

The Fall and the Sprained Arm

Their first rematch happens on a rooftop. Peter triggers the inverter, expects the Vulture to drop, and celebrates too early. The Vulture fakes falling to lure Spider-Man down, then ambushes him from below with a double uppercut while he’s completely off balance. Spider-Man gets knocked off a ledge and plummets dozens of stories before spinning his body to slow the fall.

He survives, but he lands hard on one arm and sprains it badly. For the rest of the issue, Peter fights with a busted arm — he has to rig his own webbing into a sling inside his costume just to function. Meanwhile, he also has to lie to Aunt May about how he hurt it, blaming a volleyball game.

The Rematch at the Daily Bugle

The Vulture decides his next target will be J. Jonah Jameson’s payroll at the Daily Bugle. He flies in, holds Jameson at mercy, and demands the safe. Peter happens to be in the office selling photos at the time. So he slips away, suits up with his injured arm, and confronts the Vulture in Jameson’s own building.

The fight moves from Jameson’s office to the hallway, then down into the Daily Bugle’s printing press room. At one point Spider-Man nearly falls into the giant press rollers. Eventually he wins by pinning the Vulture’s wings mid-flight with webbing, then rigging a parachute out of semi-solid web fluid to float them both safely down.

What I Check on ASM #7

The cover on ASM #7 has the Vulture mid-flight with Spider-Man in his grip. The blues and yellows on this cover are vibrant when they’ve been kept out of sunlight. However, copies stored on a bookshelf or near a window often have faded yellows, which significantly affects the eye appeal even if the structural grade is solid.

Standard Silver Age Points

Beyond color, I check the spine first — color-breaking ticks, splits, and roll. Then staples for rust and alignment. Cover attachment at both staples matters, especially on a 1963 book. For page quality, I use an OWL card. Cream-to-off-white is normal at this age. The book also needs to be complete — all pages, no cut-out coupons.

Run Collector Demand

Because ASM #7 is often bought to complete a single-digit run, I see copies in all grades come through. Some are pristine collector-owned books. Others are beat readers someone picked up at a convention for $50 and stuck in a longbox. Both have buyers. I don’t turn anything down based on condition alone.

What Your Copy Might Be Worth

ASM #7 sits in an interesting spot — it’s not a first appearance, but it’s a single-digit ASM that completes runs. Here are realistic ranges based on recent sales from Heritage Auctions and GoCollect:

A rough copy (0.5–2.0) still runs $250–$600. Good to Very Good (2.5–4.5) falls in the $600–$1,800 range. Fine copies (5.0–6.5) bring $2,000–$4,500. Meanwhile, Very Fine and above (7.0+) start at $5,000. A perfect 9.8 is rare but would approach $30,000.

When I sit down with you, I pull up the actual sales data on my phone so you can see where the numbers come from. Call me at (951) 515-9604.

Common Questions About Selling ASM #7

How much is my copy worth?

It depends on condition. Even rough copies run several hundred dollars because it’s a single-digit ASM. I evaluate it in person using current sales data to give you a real number.

It’s a second appearance — is that less valuable than a first?

Yes, first appearances command premiums. However, second appearances of major villains — especially single-digit issue numbers — still hold strong value. Most serious collectors want complete runs, which means this book gets bought alongside the first appearance. Demand never really dips.

My copy has tape on the spine — should I call?

Absolutely. Tape is common on Silver Age books that were read and stored without bags and boards. It affects the grade but doesn’t kill the value. A single-digit ASM with tape on the spine can still be worth hundreds to low thousands depending on what’s underneath.

Should I get it graded before selling?

Not necessarily. Grading from CGC or CBCS costs money, takes weeks, and means shipping a valuable book. Instead, I grade in person using the same tools and standards. However, if your book is already slabbed, I factor the grade into my offer.

I’m in Los Angeles — how soon can you come?

Usually same day or next day depending on my schedule. LA is one of my most common pickup areas. Orange County, Ventura County, and the San Fernando Valley are all regular routes. Just give me a call.

What other Spider-Man comics do you buy?

Every single one. Amazing Spider-Man #1Amazing Fantasy #15, and every issue through the full run. Visit our Spider-Man comics page for the full breakdown.

How fast do I get paid?

Same day. Cash on the spot when we make the deal. No check, no wire, no waiting.
