MAD #1 Value: The Comic Before the Magazine

The first thing to settle is whether you have a comic book or a magazine, because the difference is most of the value. MAD 1 value makes sense only from there.

MAD began in October 1952 as a color comic book, ten cents, published by EC alongside its horror and crime titles. It did not become the black-and-white magazine everybody pictures until 1955, when the Comics Code arrived and EC moved the title out of the comics business to escape it.

So there are two MAD number ones in circulation, and people find the wrong one in a box and get excited. The 1952 comic is the valuable one.

Two sales at the same grade, and what separates them

Identical grade, fourteen months apart, and a difference of about $29,000. That gap is not the market moving. It is the four words in the first row.

The Gaines File Copies were EC publisher William Gaines’ own file copies, kept at the office and never sold on a newsstand. They are the best-provenanced EC comics in existence, and CGC prints the pedigree on the label. A collector buying one is buying documented history along with the comic.

So this pair is a clean measurement of something useful: a Gaines File pedigree was worth roughly a 56% premium over an identical grade without it. Same issue, same 9.8, fourteen months apart, and the label is the main variable.

I very nearly wrote this page the other way round, as evidence that the market for this book had fallen by a third. That would have been wrong, and it is the exact mistake I warn about on every other page in this program: reading a pedigree premium as a price move.

What that means for you is straightforward. Unless your copy carries the Gaines File pedigree, the $52,069 is your comparison, not the $81,000. Anyone quoting the record at you is quoting a copy that came out of the publisher’s own office.

EC, Kurtzman, and why the comic matters

EC Comics is the most admired publisher of the pre-code era, and MAD is arguably its most consequential title. Harvey Kurtzman wrote and edited it, and the approach he invented, parodying other comics, then advertising, then everything, became a template that ran through decades of American humor.

That gives the book an audience beyond comic collecting. People who care about the history of satire want this issue, and that demand does not rise and fall with whichever superhero has a film out.

The pre-code context also matters. EC was one of the publishers the 1954 Senate hearings were aimed at, and the Comics Code that followed effectively ended its comic line. Moving MAD to magazine format was how Kurtzman and Gaines kept it alive, which makes the 1952 comic a specific artifact of the moment before the Code changed everything.

How to tell the comic from the magazine at a glance

Since this is where the money is decided, here is how to settle it in a few seconds without expert knowledge.

• Size. The 1952 comic is standard comic-book size, about seven by ten inches. The magazine is larger.
• Color. The comic is printed in full color throughout. The magazine interior is black and white.
• Price. Ten cents on the cover puts you in comic territory. Twenty-five cents indicates the magazine era.
• Issue numbering. The magazine continued the comic’s numbering from issue 24 onward, so a low number on a magazine-sized book is a reprint or a special rather than an original.

If what you have is the magazine, it is not worthless, early issues have a following, but it is a different market at a different level, and no part of the pricing on this page applies to it.

What the record actually shows

181 times since 2002, a MAD #1 has crossed a public block, paper trail intact, 1952 to now. The list:

17 sales sit at CGC 7.0 alone: $1,782 (2003), $1,495 (2004), $1,495 (2006), $1,725 (2006), $1,434 (2007), $2,151 (2016), $2,390 (2017). $1,782 then, $4,440 in 2025: the 7.0 lane moved late, and by $4,440.

Selling a MAD #1

1. Check the format and the year first. Ten cents, color, comic size, 1952. A black-and-white magazine is a different and much cheaper object.
2. Check whether the record applies to you. The $81,000 copy was a Gaines File pedigree. Without that label, the $52,069 result is the relevant one.
3. Expect the grade to decide everything. Both known sales are at 9.8, and the market for this book at ordinary grades is far less documented.
4. Look for the rest of the EC run. Pre-code EC horror and crime titles carry real value and turn up alongside this one.
