A CGC 8.5 of this book reportedly outsold a 9.0 of the same issue. That is not a mistake in the data. It is what a pedigree with a reputation for page quality does, and it is worth understanding before anyone quotes you.
The headline sale for this book is a copy that came off the press with two covers on it. That is a manufacturing error collectors pay a premium for, which makes it a poor comparison for a normal comic. Here is the number that works better.
This is one of the hardest covers to look at in Golden Age comics, and it was drawn while the events it depicts were still being uncovered. Collectors treat it as a historical document. Here is what it sells for and why the record overstates it.
Five documented sales, and the pattern in them is the opposite of what you would expect. A 4.0 and a 5.0 sold $340 apart, a 3.0 sold $54,000 more than another 3.0 fourteen months later, and a restored 8.5 brought less than either 3.0. On this book the cover is doing the work, not the grade.
For years this was the most valuable non-superhero comic in the world. The record is fifteen years old now, but underneath it sit sales at 4.0, 2.5 and even a restored 0.5, which makes it one of the few Golden Age keys I can price at the bottom of the scale.
Superman appeared on the cover of Action Comics exactly twice in 1938. Everybody knows the first one. This is the other, and a worn copy of it sold for $179,400 last year. A conserved 6.0 brought less than half that two months earlier, which tells you what the label costs on a 1938 book.
By 1949 superheroes were dying and horror was selling. So Timely retitled its flagship “Captain America’s Weird Tales” and pointed him at the supernatural. The result is one of the scarcest books in the run.

Three sales of this book since 2024. Two were wrecks with a signature on the label. One was restored. Not one is a plain, honest, unrestored comic, and that tells you something important about what survives.
Six copies of this comic have sold at public auction since 2022, at grades from 5.0 to 8.5, including one grade that sold twice. That is a rare amount of evidence for a 1939 comic, and it answers the question most sellers actually have, including which way the price is moving.
